Proclamation | Recognizing National Homelessness Awareness

WHEREAS, the month of November is observed as National Homelessness Awareness Month; and,

WHEREAS, National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week is November 15 – 21, 2026, an annual recognition sponsored by the National Coalition for the Homeless and the National Student Campaign against Hunger and Homelessness; and,

WHEREAS, in 2025, there were 745,642 people identified as experiencing homelessness in the United States; and,

WHEREAS, in 2025 there were 15,512 people identified in North Carolina as experiencing homelessness, the largest percentage increase nationally; and,

WHEREAS, in Pitt County 130 people were identified as experiencing homelessness during the 2025 annual Pitt County Point in Time Count (PIT), including 41 of whom were unsheltered, and 11 of whom were chronically homeless; and,

WHEREAS, from 2020 through 2025 Pitt County provided Rapid Rehousing assistance to 625 people in 341 households; and,

WHEREAS, Pitt County provides backpacks, food, water and other essentials to those experiencing homelessness; and assists those with food insecurity by operating the Leroy James Farmers Market, the Making Pitt Fit Community Garden, and by distributing Food & Nutrition and WIC benefits; and,

WHEREAS, this recognition is intended to spotlight the issues of hunger and homelessness in the community.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, the Pitt County Board of Commissioners does hereby proclaim the month of November as Homelessness Awareness Month and the week of November 15 - 21, 2026, as National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week.
