MOS Monday: Marine Corps Community Services Marine

Performing duties that serve fellow service members and families is the primary focus of Marine Corps Community Services Marines.

MCCS Marines, Military Occupational Specialty 4133, and Officers, MOS 4130, provide direct customer service, performing daily administrative tasks, and working as custodial supervisors of personnel, funds, property and merchandise. They also work in community-focused areas hosting morale-boosting events across installations.

In areas of retail, they manage property and merchandise through purchasing, receiving, storing, issuing, and conducting inventory audits. In doing so, they safeguard and track assets valued up to millions of dollars. In areas of food and hospitality and recreation, they directly support the quality of life of Marine communities. They also take those skills and services to deployed locations at a moment’s notice. MCCS Marines remain committed to the standards and values of the Marine Corps while serving service members and families in a demanding capacity.

Marines can laterally move into the MOS after completing four years of service and must be a corporal, up to gunnery sergeant.

“This MOS is very different because you cannot contract into it. You need to very specifically choose it, and there are high qualifications to enter,” said U.S. Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Alexis Harris, a MCCS Marine with Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron, Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point. “It is a critical-skills MOS.”

“You provide a service or experience for all people, not just for your unit or squadron,” said U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Maya Brown, an MCCS Marine with H&HS, MCAS Cherry Point.

At MCAS Cherry Point, the MCCS Marines serve a crucial role in overall MCCS mission fulfillment. “They bridge the gap between civilian and military sectors and are the main driver for quality-of-life needs of service members and families,” said Jonathan Mason, the MCCS Cherry Point director.

MCCS Marines can also be found supporting field exercises and deployments around the globe. They provide a wide range of supplies and services to Marines including uniforms, entertainment and field snacks in contested environments.

“If your unit does field training, you’ll often see us,” said U.S. Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Christopher Nix, a MCCS Marine with H&HS, MCAS Cherry Point, explaining that their services in the field can extend to meet the needed support.

Harris recalled a time when MCCS Marines were initially requested to provide services for one week. “But since we made so many people happy, and the Marines absolutely loved us out there, the unit’s commanding general requested us to stay another week until they finished their operation,” she said.

The goal of every MCCS Marine is to bring a piece of home everywhere they go, boosting morale and contributing to mission effectiveness when available.

“Whether we’re at home or in the field, MCCS Marines continue to demonstrate our dedication to mission readiness, operational excellence and taking care of their own,” said Staff Sgt. Sergio Soto, an MCCS Marine with H&HS, MCAS Cherry Point.
