Community invited to celebrate 30 years of Art in the Arboretum
NEW HANOVER COUNTY, N.C. – For 30 years, Art in the Arboretum has been highlighting the work of local artists against the picturesque backdrop of the New Hanover County Arboretum and N.C. Cooperative Extension gardens. This year’s event will continue that annual tradition, featuring more than 70 artists and vendors on site over the weekend.
Visitors are invited out from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, October 10-11 to the Arboretum at 6206 Oleander Drive to stroll through the complex and explore the amazing creations on display.
This annual fundraising event is co-hosted by Friends of the Arboretum in partnership with the N.C. Cooperative Extension. Tickets are $5 at the gate. Admission is free for children under 12, as well as those with a current military ID, and Friends of the Arboretum members. Parking is also free and available on-site.
Along with a chance to purchase art, visitors will be able to vote on which artist should be the recipient of the People’s Choice Award. The People’s Choice Awards will be announced Sunday afternoon. You can also purchase raffle tickets for a chance to win great raffle prizes. Raffle winners will be drawn and notified no later than Tuesday, October 13.
For the second year, Art in the Arboretum will feature a Children’s Corner, where young guests can enjoy a hands-on 4-H activity and create their own art. Temporary tattoos and fairy hair will also be available for both the young and the young at heart.
The event will also highlight young artists in the community, including works from DREAMS of Wilmington, a youth art education program. These up-and-coming artists will show and sell paintings, canvases, photography and more. Kids Making It, a woodworking and entrepreneurship program, will also be on site, offering items like coasters, cutting boards, candle holders, pens and bottle stoppers.
In addition to the art, food will be available all weekend from 2 Brothers Coastal Cuisine food truck.
For three decades, Art in the Arboretum has served as a major fundraiser for the Friends of the Arboretum, a nonprofit organization that supports the New Hanover County Arboretum and N.C. Cooperative Extension. The Arboretum is a living classroom for residents, students and green industry professionals, providing research-based education and practical training with an emphasis on plants adapted to the unique conditions of southeastern North Carolina.
